This is a brilliant, albeit sad, essay, Jessica. And totally believable. My sons (aged 29 and 32) make decent salaries and STILL can’t get into the housing market. Granted, Vancouver Island is one of the priciest areas to live in Canada, but still. Landlords have ALL the power and they use it. It’s criminal. I my younger days, rent was cheap, and 6 people could share a rental house, no problem. Those days are gone. I get so tired of hearing people my age “millenial bash.” It’s really tough out there for young people to get a strong foothold. Like you, a little grandparenty inheritance will be what boosts them into the housing market. Thanks for sharing this. Wonderful writing.
