HOWL
When Your Heart is Broken
The wolf showed up on the fifth day
Right after the snow started
She was timid
Stealthy
But ever watchful
Evan sat in the window of the cabin
And watched her right back
The way she planned every step
The way she lifted her head to the moon when it rose
And her final let-loose howl — a sound that turned his spine into something other than bone
And so he, too, let loose — he too howled his sadness to the sky
And in the morning
As he tread lightly
Upon new snow
He left temporary marks
On a vast and forgetful landscape
